The Saint Luis Rey Double Corona from Cuba is difficult to find due to limited production and only available in
cabinets of 50. It is one of the
top 3 prominentes produced, and finds its flavour profile between the mild Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona, and the more full-bodied Partagas Lusitania. A medium bodied smoke that tends to change
flavor throughout starting light, and developing more
full earthy floral flavors a third in and has a long almost sweet
finish with hints of cocoa, vanilla and coffee. | Origin: | Cuba | Manufactured: Hand Made | | Gauge: | Thick | Length: | 194 | | Format: | Prominente | Ring: | 49 |

Havana, April 2008: Habanos (Where real Cuban cigars are made) has just released that they are going to be dedicating 2008 to Cohiba. Sublimes Extra is the vitola chosen by Habanos s.a. for the Cohiba Habanos Collection. As usual this case resembles a book and it represents the Volume No. 8 of this Special Serie.
This case contains 20 Sublimes Extra cigars (girth 54 and 184 mm long), a size especially designed for this collection to be remembered as one of the greatest smokes ever within the brand. A considerable length, a beautiful girth comprising a well balanced blend, an excellent draw, a refined aroma and the Cohiba´s unique taste are the features that really stands out in this release.
Leaves used in the making of Cohiba cigars are the “selection of the selection” and come from the San Juan y Martinez and San Luis zones of the Vuelta Abajo region. Cohiba also has one feature which makes it stand out over the rest of Habano brands: Two of Cohiba’s filler leaves, the seco and ligero, undergo a third fermentation in barrels, which adds smoothness to the blend.
Its production limited to only 1000 cases, made by Cuban craftsmen, results in a very sought-after item for those who looks for the exclusivity and it will be available in the next months in the Casas del Habano outlets worldwide.

Havana, April 2008: Montecristo Sublimes , Cuaba Pirámides and Partagás Serie D No 5, 2008 are the brands and sizes selected for this year’s Limited Editions which will be at the markets by the end of the year. The Limited Editions will continue keeping all the leaves (filler, binder and wrapper) aged at least for two years.
Cuaba Pirámides (Girth 52 x 156 mm in the length). In keeping with the rest of the tapered sizes of the brand, Cuaba is having a Limited Edition for the first time, and it´s releasing the pyramids which are packed in Semi Plain boxes with 25 sticks in two layers.
Montecristo Sublimes (Girth 54 x 164 mm in the length) This size was first presented as part of the 2004 Limited Edition in the Cohiba brand. Now, Montecristo brings it back with its characteristic blend. A Habano to remember, respectfully long, with a proper draw and ready to show forth the notably medium to full flavour of said brand. Cigars will be packaged in SBN boxes comprising 25 units.
Partagás Serie D No 5 (Girth 50 x 110 mm in the length) All the flavour of Partagás locked in this small yet powerful smoke allowing us to feel the Partagás taste. The Series Lines from Partagás have become a guide due to the recognition of Serie D No 4 and the most recent pyramid: the Serie P No 2. Presented in SBN boxes with 25 cigars placed in two layers.
Since 2000, Habanos s.a. has been releasing Limited Editions within the most prestigious brands such as Cohiba, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Partagás, Hoyo de Monterrey and H.Upmann.
The Limited Edition distinguishes itself for the inclusion of sizes which are not part of the usual range of the brand, and is characterized by a special manufacture. The careful selection of a two-year aged wrapper from the upper level of the plant grants it a darker color and turns this product into something unique.
Binder and filler leaves used for the making of the Limited Editions cigars have been aged for two years as well. Because of its very special features, the Limited Edition is manufactured in small quantities, which makes it a particularly appreciated pleasure for the most demanding smokers.
The 2008 Limited Editions must be commercialized through the markets by the last trimester of the year.

Last year Cuba introduced the long-awaited and first appearance of a
true Cuban Maduro in the Cohiba Maduro 5 line. The new
Cohiba's were
released in three unique sizes, the Secretos size 4 3/8" x 40 ring
gauge, the Magico
size 4 1/2" x 52, and the largest Genios
at 5 1/2" x 52.
I
prefer larger cigars, and prefer taking the extra time for the larger
cigars, so naturally I was most interested in smoking the Cohiba
Maduro 5 Genios. The first one I smoked was last
April, before they were available in Canada, when a friend brought them
backfrom Cuba.
I was very skeptical that the new, much anticipated Cohiba
would live up to expectations. I'm of the mind that the
wrapper of the
cigar does not add much flavor to the smoke, because the bulk of the
blend is in the filler. The wrapper is all about aesthetic
for me, and
I love the look of a dark cigar, but I've smoked a lot of mild,
flavorless cigars that had a maduro wrapper. So, I was not
really
expecting anything much different from the regular Cohiba's,
or even
the Edition
Limitadas which are also characterized by a dark wrapper.
The first thing I noticed was the smell, even before I lit the
cigar. It had a rich, dark chocolate smell, which I find
common amongst most Cohibas,
however with the Maduro
Genios the smell was much more intense, and
delightful. This smell translated to a real full-bodied warm
taste of chocolate and cedar when the Cohiba
Genio was lit.
I didn't find the smoke to be too
complicated throughout, it pretty much maintained it's initial flavour
and got fuller as I smoked it down. I found this to be quite
pleasurable actually because the flavor, in my opinion was perfect from
the beginning. It smoked for just over an hour before I left
the last 3/4s of an inch sit.
Since that first Genios, I've tried the other Cohiba Maduro 5's, but I
always come back to the Genios. Over last year, the Cohiba
Genios aged well, enhancing the flavors that were already so
beautifully tasty. I would have to say that the Cohiba Maduro
5 Genios has been my favorite cigar of the past year.

 Habanos
s.a. will launch the Habanos Collection to the world market. As usual this case resembles a book that has
resulted from the expert hands and great skill of Cuban craftsmen.
Volume No. 7 of the Habanos Collection, dedicated this
time to the prestigious H. Upmann brand, will be launched to the market for
full enjoyment of the lovers of this brand.
H.Upmann‘s exceptional quality has set the standard for premium cigars
since it was born as a brand in 1844, reaching an important position in the
world of Habanos.
All leaves in
H. Upmann are from the Vuelta Abajo tobacco region and they are long filler,
premium cigars totally hand made. Its excellence regarding the quality of their
cigars are shown in the shape of gold
medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th
Century.
This case contains 20 “Magnum Especial” cigars (girth
55 and 155 mm long), a size especially designed for this collection to be
enjoyed with intensity and quietude. Its production limited to only
500 cases results in a very exclusive item for those who looks for perfection.
Appealing to
connoisseurs who prefer a light to medium smoke, unmistakably found in the
brand, this beautiful collection will be available in the next months in the
Casas del Habano outlets worldwide.

"Not just a cigar, it's a memory"

I was sitting in the Vancouver Cigar Company watching a customer pore over the hundreds of Cuban cigars carried. It was a daunting task. He was looking for the perfect smoke for his boss.
The guy on the counter that day had reviewed about 30 cigars with our guest when one of our regular "Cigar Club" guys Gregg stood up (Gregs a big guy) and asked the customer:
"Do you want a cigar or a memory? You can buy any of these Cuban cigars here and your boss will have a good smoke. But... how would you like to create a memory? Buy a couple Cohiba Sublimes and enjoy them with him, it will be a meeting he won't forget."
And that was it. The guy left with arguably one of the best cigars (or memories as Gregg calls them) available. Always a rich deep oily wrapper these cigars have a deep, full bodied flavour, on the stronger side but absolutely one of the smoothest most flavourful cigars you will ever experience.

This is one of the first Edicion Limitadas in a little while that has
really REALLY impressed me. I mean its only natural to expect something
a little more from an edition limitada, but this stick has gone way
beyond any of my expectations. It has an amazingly smooth and balanced
toasty-wood flavour profile with a peppery-leather finish. It's a smoke
that anyone at any level could really enjoy. The Macallan 18 i'm
enjoying it with (for no other reason than it was within arms reach)
has made it a little more difficult to properly articulate how much I'm
really enjoying this smoke. But honestly, do yourself and your palette a
favor and pick one up ASAP.

Bolivar
Gold Medal - an old classic is resurrected.
The
Gold Medal was Bolivar's signature vitola, namely a Cervantes, length 6
1/2" x 42. This was a renowned lonsdale, which is quite
uncommon these
days, with a demand similar to the Partagas 898 Varnished
Boxes. Boxes
of the Bolivar Gold Medal's were still available as late as 1992 when
Habanos SA officially removed the cigar from its catalogue.
After 1992
the Gold Medal became hugely sought after as a collector's item and
counterfeits were popping up everywhere.
Four boxes
of alleged 1998 Gold Medals were put up for sale in the March 2000
Christie's Auction. They were withdrawn after Habano S.A. confirmed
that the Gold Medals are no longer made.
This
year Habanos SA has re-released this cigar for all of us cigar lovers
to enjoy once again. You can pick some up on our website here.
Here is what some people had to say about the Bolivar Gold Medals:
The
Bolivar Gold Medal's unique three-quarter length golden alu foil
wrapping possesses a strange attraction, right down to my fancy of
using them as Christmas tree decoration. And if the gold
foil is able to foil one into thinking sweet chocolate taste, then it
deserves the medal.
There
is nothing "sweet" about the Gold Medal. This cigar is about pure Cuban
tobacco strength and taste and some harshness at times, even with more
than 10 years of aging.
What a good cigar! This smoke started
quite mild, somewhat uncharacteristic of the Bolis I've smoked. The
smoke was creamy and smooth, with nice overtones of honey and coffee.
Through the middle, it became a bit more strong and ordinary, with
mainly flavours of wood. Toward the end, I picked up hints of raisins
and cinnamon, combining nicely with the wood. If these cigars continue
to improve with age they'll be nothing short of perfection in around a
year.

Cuba is trying something new with region-specific special edition cigars. Canada is due to receive a new Bolivar called the Bolivar Simones (5 x 48) sometime before the end of this year. Here is the full list of 2007 ER: Asia/Pacific: Por Larranaga Robustos de Larranaga (4 7/8 x 50); Baltic States: Rey del Mundo Vikingos (5 1/2 x 50); Belgium: Ramon Allones Specially Selected Gran Robusto (6 1/8 x 50); Canada: Bolivar Simones (5 x 48); Great Britain: Por Larranaga Magnifico (6 5/8 x 50); Mexico: Edmundo Dantes 109 (7 1/4 x 50) for an unspecified brand (perhaps Montecristo); Middle East: Bolivar Double Coronas (7 5/8 x 49); Spain: Vegas Robaina Maestros (5 1/2 x 50) and Switzerland (2): Punch Robustos (4 7/8 x 50) and Ramon Allones Eminencias (5 7/8 x 44).
Ediciones Regionales (regional editions) is a rather new type of
marketing of Cuban cigars. Perhaps the success of the Ediciones
Limitadas (limited editions) is what played an important part while
contemplating how to provide collectors with additional specialty
items. Or maybe the national importers wanted to create something of
their own in order to differentiate from importers in other countries.
In any case, the previous limited editions were always sold out after a
short while.
The beginnings of the Regionales can
probably be traced back to sometime in 2003. The first step was taken
by the German company of 5th Avenue with their birthday edition of the
Robaina Robaina. Hunters & Frankau in England followed with the
Ramón Allones Belicosos. However, back then there wasn’t much talk of
“regional editions” — it was simply a vitola produced for one single
market.
Since the first appearance of the Ediciones
Regionales, the standards according to which they can be launched have
changed somewhat. The following common characteristics of these cigars
have been established:
- The quantity is between 1,000 and 1,500 boxes, or 10,000 and 30,000 cigars usually (there are exceptions to this rule).
- Ediciones Regionales are available only in brands that
are not to be found in the top bracket of the Habanos brand pyramid.
Presently this group is comprised of Cohiba, Montecristo, Cuaba,
Trinidad, and Robaina. (The Robaina Robaina for Germany is — as the
first regional edition ever — an exception.)
- The Ediciones Regionales are developed and commissioned
by the respective national distributor as well as possibly the
distributor’s dealers.
- The distribution is also only handled exclusively through some of the national dealers.
- No more than two vitolas can be offered as Ediciones
Regionales every two years. New special editions can only come on the
market once again after two years have passed.
- The box, or any other form of packaging (that which is
usual for the respective brand), should carry the imprint of “Torcido
exclusivamente para ...” The first boxes provided with this imprint
were the Swiss Punch Robustos.

Semi Boite Nature box of 12 cigars
Rumors
of the new Edicion Limitada from Trinidad started circulating inJuly
07, and since then we have been waiting patiently to see this
first time addition to the EL line from Trinidad. Well, I
have done
some research and have gotten the lowdown on the new,
highly-anticipated Cuban cigar. Vancouver Cigar presents the
Trinidad
Ingenios Edicion Limitada 2007.
The Trinidad Ingenios is
described as "a Cervantes plentiful of aromas, smooth taste, and
elegant appearance." The Ingenios are packed in a Semi Boite
Nature
box with 12 sticks in one layer.
You can imagine our excitement
about the new Ingenios EL 2007. Trinidad has been a favorite
brand,
characterized by a smooth flavor of cream, cinnamon, and
nuts. Since
1980, Trinidad was produced as Castro's personal brand, only available
for his consumption and as gifts to his diplomatic visitors.
In 1998
Trinidad was officially launched as an export in Trinidad,
Cuba. Now,
almost 10 years later, we have our first Trinidad Edicion Limitada, the
2007 Trinidad Ingenios.
The Trinidad Ingenios measures 42 x 6 1/2" and will debut in October of
2007.

Trinidad Ingenios 42 Ring Gauge and 6 1/2" long.

This is a member submitted photo, as the story goes one of the lobsters at their Lobster and Hockey night got a hold of a stogie and wouldn't let go. This Coronas Gigantes HR by Bolivar was going to break if pried out of theis fiesty Nova Scotia Lobster's claws so the decision was made to share the Bolivar with the Lobster.

A new cigar arrived at the shop this past week. The San Cristobal Del Habana Muralla. For a Cuban cigar the wrapper is quite dark. It is considerably longer than a Montecristo No. 2 and the Muralla Boasts a ring gauge size of 54 making it the largest ring gauge available in the store.

To be honest I bought it to celebrate closing a deal and bought it for it’s sheer size and color. What I found was a new favorite. It tastes similar to a Montecristo No. 2 but draws much more consistently, slightly less bold than the Montecristo and requires a serious commitment of time to enjoy.
I have tried several new cigars recently and will definitely be adding the San Cristobal De La Habana Muralla to my list (short list) of favorite Cuban cigars.
You can find the San Cristobal De La Habana Muralla in our store.

Friday night I asked Adam to pick my cigar for me. He
suggested the largest cigar I think I've ever smoked; the Sancho Panza
Sancho. (resized to fit within the cigar blog page).
Sancho Panza Sancho
I'm partial to the Ramone Allones Gigantes and the Montecristo "A"
when I'm looking for a cigar I can enjoy over an hour or so. This
one appeared a little lighter in color than I would normally want;
right or wrong I usually look for a dark oily wrapper on my cigars as
this usually implies age and strength in a good cuban cigar (but not
always).
I was suprised when I lit up the Sancho Panza Sancho. The
flavor was very similar to that of the Montecristo and the draw
was smooth and consistent. For what appeared to be a younger box
of cigars this one was quite rich, deep and flavourful with a light
coffee accent to it.
If you looking for good quality both in flavor and craftsmanship the Sancho Panza Sancho is a good buy. The Sancho Panza Sancho can be found here.

Nigel Horsley (left) and Shane Gibson (right) pictured here after work on a Thursday, smoking Cuban cigars. Nigel and Shane frequently can be found relaxing and talking business over a cigar and a single malt scotch. This particular evening they were enjoying two Montecristo Edmundos.
Nigel a consummate PR professional and Shane, business author and consultant, both claim that the relationships they have built while smoking cigars with other people in the business community has paid dividends. Shane stated that:
"...in this environment we all leave the office at the door, enjoy a Cuban cigar with each other and truly get to know what people are like. That guy at the office, that's not me, that's Shane the author and speaker, this way we really have an opportunity to get to know each other and solidify business relationships... this beats a power lunch anytime."

The Importance of Buying Cuban Cigars from Authorized Dealers
A recent article about the volume of counterfeit Cuban cigars (and other varieties) that are entering the USA was brought to my attention from Findlaw.com. Following is an astonishing excerpt:
"Still, what was seized late last year from several warehouses in Miami astounded both police and industry officials. There were enough counterfeit cigar bands, boxes, cellophane and other materials for between 30 and 50 million cigars - sufficient to make a significant dent in the legitimate premium market."
This was just one organized group of cigar counterfeiters passing off fake Cuban and non-Cuban brands in the premium category. Unfortunately, it's buyer beware when you buy Cuban cigars online from non-authorized dealers or importers. If it's from an individual online, your chances of getting a box full of sawdust instead of those wonderful dark Cohiba's is pretty high.
My advice is to seek out sites online that are authorized by organizations like Havana House, and verify with Havana House that the dealer is actually authorized. If you have any questions about the authenticity of Cuban cigars in Canada you can contact Havana House.
The bottom line is if the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

We just received our shipment of Siglo Humidors and Lighters and I must say that I am very impressed. The humidors are pieces of art and affordable, from the 15 layers of laquer to the digital hygrometer and right down to the packaging, these are Elie Blue quality, without breaking the bank.
The lighters are sleak, especially the Mother of Pearl line, and very reliable. It's always a concern with torch lighters whether they will work consistently or not and the Siglo Jet Flames, from what I have seen so far, are perfect.
You can see the entire Siglo line in the Accessories section or the Specials section.
